The Kumbh Mela is the largest religious gathering in the world. The Mela, which happens once in 12 years, takes place at the holy Sangam, the confluence of the Ganges, the Yamuna and the Saraswati rivers in Prayagraj (formerly Allahabad). The 2013 iteration of the Mela, a Maha Kumbh which happens every 144 years, which was a saw more than 120 million attendees. This year’s Mela is an "Ardh Kumbh" - that falls between two Melas. For this year’s Mela, which is taking place from 15th January to 4th March, officials are expecting 15 to 20 million people. For this year’s iteration of Kumbh, the government has taken wide ranging precautions to ensure that no child is separated from their family and every child is safe. KSCF will be lending full support to the government to ensure a Child Friendly Kumbh.
KSCF will leverage its decades-long expertise and experience in child protection, even as it employs a multi-pronged approach to ensure a Child Friendly Kumbh.
In & Around Mela
Collaboration with the Government - KSCF will be lending its support to the government efforts to ensure a child friendly Kumbh. KSCF will be a participant in the Child Friendly kiosk belonging to the Ministry of Women and Child Development within the Mela premises. Once a lost child is brought to the centre, the operatives will collect all relevant information about the child which will then be displayed on a LED screen outside the centre. In the meantime, the child will stay in the shelter home built within the centre for next four hours. Parallelly, the child’s information will also be uploaded on the Lost and Kumbh mobile app and www.kumbh.gov.in
A team of Barefoot Volunteers
A team of Barefoot Volunteers will be deployed in and around the centre in the Mela premises to find cases of lost children and disseminate information on children’s issues. The Barefoot Volunteers will also engage people and inspire them to take the 100 million pledge. Students from the city will be supporting KSCF in this venture.
Outside the Mela
People travel from all across the country to attend the Mela, therefore our grassroots campaign against child sexual abuse and trafficking, Mukti Caravan, will be conducting programmes in and around Prayagraj. A host of interactive, awareness generation activities will be conducted on children’s rights issues including child trafficking, child abuse and child labour.
